Coffee drinking can take many forms. For some people it gives them a boost without which they cannot imagine starting the day. For others, it symbolizes afternoon peace and quiet, something they can enjoy over a protracted period. In some countries, the preparation and drinking of coffee has become an important part of cultural life.

Italians and coffee

Italians are undeniably coffee lovers and the very first café in Europe was established in the country. In Italy, coffee is an integral part of every morning and they either prepare it at home in a mocha pot or indulge in an espresso in their favourite café on their way to work. It is not unusual for them to enjoy a coffee while standing and reading a newspaper.

Strong coffee in Vietnam

The Vietnamese also have their own coffee traditions. They are the second biggest coffee producers after Brazil and prefer distilled, extremely strong coffee, which they prepare in a special aluminium pot.

The Arabic ritual

The Arabic ritual is also interesting. A cup of coffee is brought to you on a saucer. Once you have finished your coffee, you place the cup back on the saucer. If you place the cup upright, it is a sign that you would like another. If you do not want another coffee then you must place the cup upside down or on its side. In Arab countries, the serving of coffee is a display of hospitality and it is very rude to refuse one.

Preparing coffee in Africa

You can find another way to drink coffee in Africa. The host will prepare the coffee directly in front of their guest. First they will fry the green grains in a pan, which is then ground to a fine powder. This is then gradually poured into a kettle with water. As soon as it starts to boil, it is ready. Various spices are added to it, such as cardamom or cinnamon, and then the coffee is enjoyed in small cups.

As well as these rituals that we may encounter around the world, everyone has their own way of enjoying a cup of coffee. Some like to indulge in coffee in the morning, others after lunch, others like to drink with friends. Whatever your ritual, the main thing is that you like coffee and appreciate the joy that it brings.
